One of the primary goals of NAVLA is to connect attorneys or law firms with reputable, experienced VLAs.

If you would like to submit a Request for Proposals (RFP), please complete the form below. In the drop-down menu for the “subject”, select “Submit RFP”. In the comments section, please leave detailed information about your needs. VLAs will contact you directly via e-mail. If you would prefer to be contacted by telephone or other method, please indicate that in your comments as well.

RFPs are very similar to the standard hiring process with just a few small differences:

  • Instead of a cover letter and resumé, you will receive proposals from VLAs
  • Rather than interviewing potential employees, you will be interviewing an independent contractor
  • In most cases, the interview will take place over the phone

Once you’ve reviewed the proposals, respond to those who have the qualifications you’re seeking. Set up a time for an interview and use that time to discuss your needs in more detail, get more information about the VLA, and assess the “professional chemistry” you have with the VLA.

After you have chosen a VLA, you will work together to set up a plan, decide which tasks you will be delegating to them, what your expectations are, what the VLA will need from you, the number of hours you will need, payment amounts and due dates, and any other information either party may need.

Typically, you will then pay a deposit and sign a contract with the VLA. These will vary depending on the VLA’s own business policies. Most VLAs offer retainer packages which will include a set number of hours each month and include a discounted rate. Others bill only at an hourly rate. Rates for VLAs will vary but they are usually between $30 to $80 per hour. (These rates may seem high if you’re used to working with an in-house legal assistant but keep in mind that VLAs as business owners, are paying their own expenses so you don’t have to, and they’re only billing you for the hours actually worked.)
