Tentative Program Outline

We are in the process of developing the certification program for NAVLA. Below is the tentative program outline:

Introduction to VLA – Learn the basics of working as a Virtual Legal Assistant. Discuss the differences between working in an office versus working virtually and the special circumstance that apply to doing business online

Organization Systems – Discuss various methods of managing clients, your own calendar and files as well as those of your clients.

Software – Training sessions using the various programs you may need as a virtual worker including software for general administration and software used by attorneys and law firms

Online Communication – Covering email management, managing teleconferences and webinars, and auto-responders for newsletters

Social Media – How you can use blogging, Facebook, and other social media services to promote your own business and assist attorneys with their own use of social media

Marketing – Understand the basics of marketing and implementing the most effective methods

Legal Knowledge – This part of the program will be completed by submission and approval of your prior education and experience as a Legal Assistant/Paralegal to assure potential clients of your familiarity with the legal system

Ethics – Special considerations as they apply to working virtually and working in the field of law, including security, confidentiality, data protection and handling client information

Continuing Education – Monthly or bi-monthly sessions to ensure that VLAs are up to date on the most recent technology and issues related to lawyers, legal assistants, and virtual teams

One of the features planned for NAVLA is a monthly spotlight hosted on the NAVLA blog. This spotlight will feature an interview of either an attorney who works with a VLA or a NAVLA member.

As part of the development of the National Association of Virtual Legal Assistants, I’ve been reading some legal blogs and speaking with some attorneys to get a better idea of how attorneys feel about hiring VAs.

I decided to take a quick survey to get a better idea of what attorneys think of the VLA industry and working with VLAs. It’s a very quick survey and it’s not limited to attorneys. I’d like to invite anyone to take a few moments to answer it.

And feel free to expand on any of your answers or to ask any questions.

More volunteers!

I’ve received more offers from VLAs volunteering to get NAVLA running. The more volunteers we have, the faster we’ll be able to launch memberships. The hard part, of course, is trying to find a time for all of us to “meet”. Have you ever tried to get a bunch of VAs together at the same time? Its like nailing Jell-O to a wall!
